What Is a Retail Drug License?
A retail drug licence is a licence issued by the licensing authority concerned, which allows the eligible concern to supply specified medicines in the retail trade, in accordance with the terms of the licence. Retail pharmacies usually deal in medicines to individuals according to prescriptions, wherever required, along with other items. The licence ensures the proper sale of the medicines through proper premises and under the control of proper persons. The law governing the sale and distribution of medicines in India is the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Drugs Rules, 1945. The licensing authorities in States are responsible for applying the relevant rules.
The licences will depend upon the medicines and activities covered under each licence category. Some examples are licences for normal retail sale of allopathic medicines and licences for sale of some specified medicines, restricted retail sale or homoeopathic medicines.
It would be advisable to ascertain the applicable licence before filing the application form. Filing an incorrect form may delay the process and lead to rejection of the application form itself.
