NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production) certification helps farmers, farmer groups, processors, traders and exporters demonstrate that their products meet applicable organic production standards. Implemented by APEDA under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, it covers organic production, processing, handling, packaging and labelling.
At PSR Compliance, we assist businesses with document preparation, selecting an accredited certification body, application support and ongoing compliance. Whether you want to establish organic farming practices, process organic products or export organic goods from India, we help you navigate the NPOP certification process and prepare for the applicable inspection and certification requirements.
What Is NPOP Certification?
NPOP stands for National Programme for Organic Production. It is India's official system for organic certification. It sets the rules for how organic crops, animals, wild-harvest products and processed foods must be produced, handled, stored, packed and labeled.
Under NPOP, products must be grown and processed without synthetic fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or GMOs. Independent inspectors check the farm or unit, and an accredited certification body decides whether to grant the certificate.
NPOP is also the system behind APEDA organic certification. APEDA frames the standards, accredits the certification bodies and runs the TraceNet system. It does not inspect your farm itself. That is done by accredited agencies.
India has one of the largest organic sectors in the world. FiBL and IFOAM's 2024 yearbook, which APEDA cites, ranks India second in organic agricultural land and first in the number of organic producers.
