In India, every food business operator must comply with the regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). For small food businesses, the most common requirement is the Basic FSSAI License, also known as FSSAI Registration.
This blog explains what a Basic FSSAI License is, who needs it, and why it is important for food business owners.
A Basic FSSAI License is the simplest form of food safety registration in India. It is designed for small-scale food businesses with limited operations.
Unlike State or Central licenses, which are meant for medium and large enterprises, Basic FSSAI Registration applies to businesses with annual turnover up to ₹12 lakhs.
This license is mandatory for any individual or entity involved in manufacturing, processing, storing, distributing, or selling food in a small capacity.
Here are examples of businesses that typically require Basic Registration:
Small retailers and shop owners
Home-based food sellers (tiffin services, bakery, snacks)
Cottage industries related to food
Hawkers and petty food vendors
Temporary stalls and small-scale caterers
Milk collection centers with low volume
If your turnover exceeds ₹12 lakhs, you must apply for a State or Central License instead.
The application is made by submitting Form A to the local FSSAI office or online portal.
The license is valid for 1 to 5 years, depending on the period selected during application.
Once approved, you receive a 14-digit FSSAI registration number that must be displayed on food packages or premises.
Issued by the Food Safety Department of the respective State.
Even for small businesses, having a Basic FSSAI License offers many benefits:
It is compulsory under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Displays commitment to hygiene and quality.
Operating without registration can lead to fines and legal action.
Essential when scaling up operations in the future.
